At Refuge Homes, we strive to use what God has given us to bless others. That’s why we love partnering with life-changing ministries–because it allows us (and our impact investors) to use our homes for good.

Today, we’re highlighting one of these ministries—Restorative Transitions—and showing the impact our investors are making through this partnership.

An Overview of Restorative Transitions

Restorative Transitions is a nonprofit based in Durham, NC dedicated to helping people reacclimate into society after being in prison.

Their program provides essential support for individuals seeking to re-enter the workforce, improve their health, and rebuild their lives.

While not everyone completes the program, every graduate has avoided going back to prison.

A key part of the Restorative Transitions program is providing stable housing in a group living environment, which is where Refuge Homes comes in.

Our Approach to Partnering with Restorative Transitions

Restorative Transitions rents homes from us, and our approach to housing is different from most landlords in three major ways:

1. We’re willing to rent to them. Many landlords won’t take the risk of housing former inmates. We do—because we trust Restorative Transitions, and we believe in their mission.

2. We provide long-term stability. Unlike many landlords who sell properties within a year after residents have moved in, (forcing them to relocate) we’re committed to keeping these homes available long-term.

3. We designed a home specifically for them. Recognizing the unique needs of Restorative Transitions, we built a house with large bedrooms and multiple bathrooms for group living. Additionally, we constructed a smaller accessory dwelling unit in the backyard for program graduates.

This approach enriches our partnership with Restorative Transitions. And because of this partnership, these homes are having a positive impact on the lives of people in their program. This positive impact is clearly visible to anyone who visits these homes.

The Impact of These Homes

We at Refuge Homes have seen first-hand how people in the Restorative Transitions program are benefiting from our partnership with this ministry.

Here are two ways:

1. Residents take pride in their homes.

The houses Restorative Transitions rents from us are clean and well-maintained. This is no small feat, given that the homes are used for group living.

Restorative Transitions requires tenants to share household duties, using chore charts to ensure everyone contributes. This system fosters a sense of ownership and commitment.

2. Residents experience a fresh start.

For those who choose to be part of the program, these homes represent more than just a place to stay—they represent a second chance.

The residents understand the opportunity they’ve been given, and they’re determined to move forward, not backward.

We are proud to play a role in helping Restorative Transitions give these residents a fresh start.
