At Refuge Homes, our impact investors play a vital role in creating lasting change in North Carolina communities. In the case of Durham’s Hayti district, that kind of lasting change is taking place through our involvement in:
Helping revitalize the neighborhood with new, quality housing
Providing housing for two local nonprofits to use within that neighborhood
In this post, we’ll discuss both of these points.
The Revitalization of Hayti
Once known as Durham’s Black Wall Street, Hayti was a vibrant center of Black culture and enterprise. Over time, it’s experienced both prosperity and pain.
Now, the neighborhood is telling a new story, defined by revitalization.
And we feel called to be part of that story.
At Refuge Homes, we’re helping revitalize this neighborhood by removing homes that are in disrepair and replacing them with quality new ones that offer long-term stability.
When people move into these new homes, they’re more likely to stay, invest, and build community.
This is what it looks like when revitalization happens.
Some of the properties will be developed and sold, so more folks can own homes there.
Other properties will be kept in our portfolio to serve our nonprofit partners that are making a difference in the community.
How Nonprofits Are Using Our Properties
Some of the homes we have recently built in Hayti are being used by local nonprofits.
These nonprofits include Self Discovery Transitional Living Program and Restorative Transitions.
Here’s a bit about each...
Self Discovery Transitional Living Program (SDLTP)
SDLTP is using two of our properties to use as sober living homes.
As a Durham-based nonprofit, SDLTP supports folks recovering from addiction by providing stable housing, resources, and encouragement, allowing these individuals to reclaim their lives and rediscover who they’re meant to be.

Restorative Transitions
Restorative Transitions provides stable housing for folks who are coming out of incarceration.
This Durham-based nonprofit offers holistic care for individuals who are seeking to rebuild their lives. The Christ-centered approach Restorative Transitions takes helps men and women transition back into the community with dignity, support, and hope.

We are proud to see how our nonprofit partners are using our properties to serve people in the Hayti district.
Our Impact Investors Help Make This Possible
The lasting change happening in the Hayti district is just part of the difference our impact investors make.
By funding quality housing in under-resourced areas, our investors help create safe, welcoming spaces where nonprofits can continue their work of restoration and healing.
If you’d like to join us in making a meaningful impact in Hayti—and in other communities throughout North Carolina—consider joining us as an impact investor.
